Article

This past weekend, blueAPACHE sent an elite team of athletes (their descriptor, not ours) to embark on the Melbourne Tough Mudder course at the State Motorcycle Centre in Broadford. Attempted by thousands, Tough Mudder is a twenty-kilometre commando style course with over twenty different obstacles to crawl through, scale, jump over, swim, jump off or climb. Most were drenched in mud or drowned in water for good measure – intermingled amongst the very hilly (and energy draining) terrain. The challenges included crawling through a box filled with mud and tear gas, swimming through shipping containers filled with water and ice, and scaling multiple walls too high for a single person to climb. Most were designed to be impossible for an individual to complete alone, reinforcing the need for teamwork, to which, the team excelled. Exhausted after some hours of running and climbing, the team neared the finish line. One obstacle stood before them. It appeared to be decorative, a wall of fairy lights adorning a large mud pit; obviously set up as a celebration of the day’s achievements. As several soon discovered, not all decorations are nice. The pretty lights were live wires zapping everyone with electric shocks as they ran through (electric-fence-type stinging). Unfortunately, several of the blueAPACHE team slipped into the mud pool trying to avoid the shocks, making the shocks a little more ‘all-of-body’ than they should have been. They event itself was very challenging, but as far as team building events go, it was exceptional. The blueAPACHE team successfully worked together ensuring everyone made it to the end. Congratulations to our exhausted team, we look forward to seeing what the next challenge proves to be.
