blueAPACHE Victoria have moved into their new home

Further to our earlier announcement, the Victorian operations of blueAPACHE have now moved into their new home — a milestone reflecting sustained growth and the practical need for space to keep hiring.

Note on current details: blueAPACHE's Melbourne head office is today located at Level 21, 242 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. The move described here is a point in the company's history rather than the current address.

From a spare bedroom in Vermont South

The move is best understood against where the company started.

blueAPACHE was ASIC-registered on Thursday 30 July 1998 and founded in Vermont South, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs — beginning from a spare bedroom, with a vision of making enterprise-grade technology more accessible and more accountable.

The distance between that and a floor of a city tower is the distance between an idea and an institution.

Why growth forces the move

Professional services businesses outgrow offices in a particular way. Headcount does not rise smoothly — it steps. Each new client of scale requires engineers; each cluster of engineers requires the service desk, project delivery and account management capacity around it; and each of those requires desks.

blueAPACHE's trajectory:

A business tripling in less than seven years does not merely need more space. It needs different space — laid out for collaboration between engineering and service delivery, with the meeting capacity a larger client base requires, and with room to keep growing rather than a lease that constrains the next two years.

What a head office does in a services business

With remote and hybrid work now normal, it is worth being specific about why the physical office still matters here.

Engineering happens in conversation. Complex technical problems are solved faster when the person who has seen the failure mode before is within earshot. This is the single hardest thing to reproduce remotely.

Junior engineers learn by proximity. Technical judgement is transferred by watching how senior people approach an unfamiliar problem — not by documentation. blueAPACHE runs a traineeship programme, and programmes like it depend on that proximity.

Incidents are managed better in a room. During a serious incident, a physical space with the right people in it removes coordination overhead at exactly the moment coordination overhead is most expensive.

Clients visit. Mid-market clients evaluating a long-term partner want to see the operation. A managed services provider is asking to be trusted with the systems the business runs on, and being able to show the team doing that work is not a marketing exercise.

The national and international footprint

Melbourne is head office. blueAPACHE also operates from:

Underneath sits the infrastructure: three geographically diverse data centres on Australia's eastern seaboard, the emPOWER Network reaching 165+ data centre locations, and Points of Presence in London (2019) and Singapore (2020).

Funded from the business

blueAPACHE remains Australian-owned. Founder Chris Marshall is sole proprietor — no external shareholders. Property and platform decisions alike are funded from profitable operation, which is why they are made on operational logic and a long horizon rather than to satisfy an external timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Where is blueAPACHE's Melbourne head office now? Level 21, 242 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. The move described in this post is a point in the company's history rather than the current address.

Where did the company start? In Vermont South, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, from a spare bedroom. blueAPACHE was ASIC-registered on Thursday 30 July 1998.

Why does growth force an office move in a services business? Because headcount steps rather than rising smoothly. Each new client of scale requires engineers, each cluster of engineers requires service desk, project delivery and account management capacity around it, and each of those requires desks. A business that tripled in under seven years needs different space, not just more of it.

What was the growth trajectory? Fewer than 80 staff at the end of 2016, 100 during 2017 after 32% growth that year, and more than 280 by July 2023 with a further 20 roles recruiting — approximately 30% year-on-year growth sustained over many years, and 16 consecutive record years by the end of 2014.

Why does a physical office still matter when hybrid work is normal? The page gives four reasons specific to this business. Complex engineering problems are solved faster when someone who has seen the failure mode is within earshot. Junior engineers acquire technical judgement by watching how senior people approach unfamiliar problems, not from documentation — which is what a traineeship programme depends on. Serious incidents are managed better in a room, where coordination overhead is removed at the moment it is most expensive. And mid-market clients evaluating a long-term partner want to see the operation they are trusting with the systems their business runs on.

Where else does blueAPACHE operate? Sydney (Level 7, 219 Castlereagh Street), Brisbane (Level 2, 16 Marie Street, Milton), London (128 City Road, EC1V 2NX) and Miami (382 NE 191st Street), over three geographically diverse Australian data centres, the emPOWER Network reaching 165+ data centre locations, and points of presence in London from 2019 and Singapore from 2020.

How are decisions like this funded? From profitable operation. blueAPACHE is Australian-owned with founder Chris Marshall as sole proprietor, no external shareholders, so property and platform decisions alike are made on operational logic and a long horizon rather than an external timetable.
